Threat of M4 East looms over Drummoyne Electorate

March 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

“The State government will not rule out construction of the M4 East motorway extension from Concord through to Haberfield”, said Bernard Rooney, Greens Candidate for Drummoyne. “Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal is reported to have said (SMH, 2/3/7) that the the road was in the state’s 10 year infrastructure plan, but would not say what steps it would take in the next four years to get the project started.

“If constructed, this will have a deleterious effect on the Drummoyne electorate. Traffic will continue to increase, and more and more cars will be fed into the Concord, Five Dock and Haberfield areas.”

“The Greens in this election campaign, as we were in the previous State election (2003), are firmly opposed to the M4 East.

“We cannot tunnel our way out of traffic congestion”, said Mr Rooney. “The M4 East and the Inner West Motorway will cause massive increases in induced traffic growth. Premier Morris Iemma should rule out the whole project immediately. I am also calling on Liberal Candidate for Drummoyne Greg Long and sitting Drummoyne Member Angela D’Amore (ALP) to rule out the M4 East.”

“The answer is public transport, and in particular investment in light and heavy rail. Sydney’s public transport has been neglected for years while over $10 billion has been spent on building motorways.

“The Greens are committed to affordable, efficient and safe public transport. We need fewer cars on the road and a more extensive public transport system, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, reduce congestion and provide fairer and more equitable access to mobility.”
