Power to the People – Connectivity – Technology
Herald article on IT and local government includes a short interview with me. Phone followed by email and snailmail is the most common form of contact with residents. The blog serves as an ‘official website’ and repository for material my work generates; and yet at the same time, through the comments facility, creates an opportunity for feedback, comment and debate. Hopefully this can grow over time.
This blog is designed and written by myself, without support from Council staff, although with some much valued assistance from my Green colleagues. Free Software such as WordPress and Ubuntu GNU/Linux is used for the project. I successfully installed Linux (RH6.0) on a PC 5 or 6 years ago. It was stable and usable, but Ubuntu shows a vast improvement in a few short years. I find that there are many useful and attractive features to this particular Linux installation. Free Software is a phenomenon – I predict a growing role for it, including in government, corporations and the home.
